Wijngaard Kaas was founded 80 years ago. At Wijngaard kaas, the noble art of ripening cheese is a family affair. Piet van den Wijngaard began in 1936 by selling cheese. He delivered groceries on a cart pulled by dogs to the farmers around Woerden in exchange for the cheese they made. Jan van de Wijngaard, took over the business in 1948 and moved to a historical warehouse from 1906. While his colleagues were building modern warehouses, he recognized the essence of historic ripening. The extraordinary micro-climate of the historical warehouse gives Reypenaer cheese more flavor, depth and complexity.
